Berlin Sightseeing

Berlin offers a wealth of sightseeing opportunities for the visitor to this historic city. Here we offer a quite substantial list of tourist sites with pertinent information about each.

Pariser Platz and Brandenburg Gate

The Brandenburg Gate which is 65 ft. high, 213 ft. wide and 36 ft. thick was built from 1788-1791 by Karl Gotthard Langhans. It was the first classical building in Berlin and is shaped after the "Propylene" in Athens. In 1794 Johann Gottfried Schadow built the "Quadriga" on the roof of the Brandenburg Gate which is a foursome horse and cart including the goddess Eirene. In 1806 Napoleon and his troops marched into Berlin and transported the Quadriga to Paris where it was shown in the Louvre as a sign of victory. Marshall Blücher took the Quadriga back to Berlin after the victory over the French in 1814. It became the symbol for demonstrations of Nazi-Germany's power during the Second world War. On the night of the 13th of August 1961 the Brandenburg Gate was closed off by armed forces of the NVA (National People's Army) with armored cars and the construction of the Berlin Wall began. From 1961-1989 the Brandenburg Gate was located in the no-man's land between East and West-Berlin and became a symbol of Berlin as a divided city. In 1989 the borders between the two German countries were opened and now the gate became the center of German reunification.

The Reichstag was constructed from 1884–94 by Paul Wallot. Part of the Reichstag was destroyed in a fire on 27 November 1933. Restored between 1957 and 1972.
